Kodi Is Now On The Windows Store
It has been brought to my attention that you can now get Kodi from the Windows 10 store if you are running the Windows 10 Anniversary update. For those who use a Windows based HTPC this is huge. Now you will be able to get automatic Kodi updates, as well as some possible other goodies down the road like live tile support. The Kodi team also will be getting some added benefit like the ability to view logs from the Windows store. Ever since I switched to a Windows based HTPC so I could play more games I missed being able to have Kodi automatically update like I did when I was running OpenELEC.
Unfortunately because this was ported with the Desktop Bridge, Kodi still can only be run on a Desktop PC or a Surface. The Kodi team hopes that this is only one step in eventually bringing Kodi to Windows Phone and back to the Xbox as well. As Kodi started its life as Xbox Media Center and was originally only available for the console before gaining new life on the desktop, it would be pretty neat to see it make its way back.
The only available version so far is Kodi 17 Krypton Beta 2. This will continue to be updated until a final release. Be aware, this version will use the same userdata folder as any existing installation so if you are still running Kodi 16 you may want to make a backup of all your databases. You can download Kodi from the Windows Store here, and if you prefer to go with the original distribution method of downloading an installer from Kodi’s website you can still do that as well.
Good on you Kodi! We look forward to seeing your media center software on anything and everything that has a display!
