Mister Sinister Confirmed For Wolverine 3
One of the few iconic X-men villains that haven’t made their way onto the big screen is Mister Sinister. According to Cinemablend that may change in the near future. Speculation has been running wild since X-men: Apocalypse was released, showing a post-credits scene where a vial of Weapon X’s (Wolverine) blood was placed into a briefcase bearing the name Essex Corp. Comic book fans might recognize Essex Corp. is owned by one Nathaniel Essex a.k.a Mister Sinister. Now it has been officially confirmed by producer,Simon Kinberg that Sinister will be making an appearance in the yet untitled third installment of Wolverine. Confirmation was made in the audio commentary attached to the digital release of X-men Apocalypse.
Mister Sinister, who was introduced way back in 1987, was created to provide a new villain for the X-men to face as writer Chris Claremont felt Magneto and his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants were becoming stale. He was originally conceived as an adult with the appearance of a child, with the character as we know it being a robot built to act as an agent for the real Mister Sinister. This origin was ultimately scrapped as Claremont moved on from X-men. Sinister’s origin was later imagined as Nathaniel Essex, a genetics obsessed Victorian era scientist who makes a deal with the mutant Apocalypse to gain control over every cell in his body, and virtual immortality. Mister Sinister has a long and storied history with the X-men (including creating Cable, who is set to appear in the Deadpool sequel.) It will be interesting to see where they take the character, or if he is even going to be the main villain in the upcoming Wolverine movie.
Eric Eisenberg of Cinemablend has put forth the theory that Mister Sinister / Nathaniel Essex may be played by Richard E. Grant who famously portrayed John Seward in 1992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula. “In the casting report back in April when Richard E. Grant signed on to The Wolverine, the character name was kept a secret, but the role is described as being a mad scientist. “Mad scientist” happens to be a remarkably apt description of Mister Sinister, whose existence in Marvel Comics has found him regularly conducting insane experiments involving gene splicing and cloning, ” said Eisenberg.
I must say, I am looking forward to seeing this one. As we all know, the villain makes or breaks a comic book movie (see Suicide Squad for an example of what not to do!) and Grant has the chops to pull off a multifaceted take on the character. Are you excited?
Wolverine 3 which is set to feature Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and Patrick Stewart (Professor Xavier) in possibly their last appearances as the iconic X-men characters, is slated for a 2017 release.
