Slimmer PS4 with 500 GB Hard Drive And HDR Announced
Yesterday Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that the new version of the company’s much touted PS4 gaming console will be a little leaner in the waistline. Sony has also managed to drop power consumption by 34% of the original system. Not a bad way to save a few dollars to help fund the microwaveable burritos and Mountain Dew (Editor’s Note: Pepsico, you can make the check payable to Theaterverse) necessary for a non-stop gaming binge.
The new system also boasts an onboard 500GB hard drive standard, and HDR (High Dynamic Range) imaging technology out of the box. The same HDR technology, which enables the system to reproduce a greater dynamic range, will also be awakened in all current and future PS4 systems via a firmware update.
According to Sony the new device is about 30% smaller and weighs about 25% less. “The form factor of the new system inherits the slanted body design of the previous models, with the foreside and backside of its body slightly angled. The corners are trimmed and curved, giving it a softer impression that would appeal to a wider range of audience. The new simple look, with gloss finished PS family mark designed on the center of the top surface, will fit perfectly wherever it is placed.” says Sony. The new hotness will be available starting at $299 on September 15th.
The new PS4 looks pretty slick, but let’s not forget about Microsoft’s Project Scorpio which they are touting as being the “Most Powerful Console Ever.” With an 8-core CPU and 6TFLOPs of GPU power, I believe it. Take a look at the video below for more information.
So there you have it. With the slimmer PS4 available in a few days, and Microsoft’s Project Scorpio set to be released this holiday season there are some exciting options out there for living room gaming.
