Plex Partners With Silicondust To Be Your DVR
Cord cutters have something to get really excited about. Super popular HTPC software PLEX has just announced that you will soon be able to record live TV by pairing it with a digital antenna and a fantastic HDHomerun device from Silicondust.
Traditionally PVR (Personal Video Recorder) solutions have either been locked into cable-company or 3rd party set-top boxes or oftentimes needlessly complex and confusing combinations of hardware, software, goat sacrifices, prayers, and soft weeping (Editor’s Note: I just had something in my eye DAVE!) Plex is already known for their excellent user interface and ease of use and I am sure the new DVR end of their software is no exception. In fact, if you haven’t given Plex a try when it comes to managing your media library you are missing out. It is great software with a multitude of features including transcoding and streaming your media to mobile devices.
Plex has licenced EPG (Electronic Program Guide) data from Gracenote that covers 71 different countries so it is likely they have yours. They also support most modern HDHomerun devices including the Connect, Extend, Expand, and Prime, although Plex has made no mention of being able to use the CableCard features of the Prime.
As exciting as this announcement is, it isn’t without its caveats. Firstly this is beta software, and bugs should be expected. Secondly, in order to get in on this hotness you will need to be a Plex Pass subscriber. The Plex Pass subscription will only set you back a 5 spot each month (or $40 a year, or $140 for a lifetime subscription) and you get a few other nifty features like offline media syncing, user account controls, parental locks, premium music features etc. In all likelihood a good portion of the cord cutters out there are already spending nearly that much on a Schedules Direct subscription every year anyway, and Plex includes the data for free.
Another issue is that there is currently no way to watch TV live or have any type of time-shifting experience in Plex’s native DVR app. The plex team made it clear that these things are on their roadmap, however. There is a HDHomerun viewer plugin available for plex that will let you watch live TV available in the meantime. It might not be the perfect solution, but it should hold you over until all the wrinkles are ironed out.
