Google Play Movies & TV Content Coming To VIZIO SmartCast App
If you have a Vizio Chromecast enabled smart TV and an Android device you likely have Vizio’s SmartCast app. There is a pretty beefy update in the pipes that will bring the power of your Google Play Movie and TV library to the app.
The SmartCast app allows you to search for content and gives a choice of apps that are able to play it on the TV such as Netflix, VUDU, Hulu, Google Play Movies & TV, YouTube, HBO NOW and more. In addition to the new content options, this new update comes with some performance improvements. According to Vizio:
The newly enhanced VIZIO SmartCast app provides users a faster all-around content aggregation experience. From quicker load time for movies, TV shows, videos, music and more, to faster population of search results, enhanced VIZIO SmartCast app performance makes finding content easier than ever.
The Vizio SmartCast app has quite a few scathing reviews on the Google Play Store, and I am sure the speed increases and overall improvements will come as a welcome change to those who rely on the much-derided app to control their TV.
Vizio also baked in a brand-new Android widget that allows the lazy among us (me *ahem) to control basic features like Volume, Play & Pause, and Power even when your device is locked. The app will also now automatically turn on the TV and switch it to the proper input when a user chooses to “cast” from their Android device.
The only real downside I can see from a setup like this is roommates or family members will also have to have the SmartCast app installed or they will be out of luck if you were to leave and take your phone with you. Barring that, it seems to be a pretty cool way to bake “Smart” features into a TV without having to build an entire operating system.
