TV Highlight: Escaping Polygamy
Full disclosure: despite being a media junky, I rarely get the opportunity to jump right on new shows. Between child raising, work doing, life leading, and a fair bit of inertia I often don’t catch shows until a full season or more has passed. Today’s Highlight falls into that category. A&E’s Escaping Polygamy is currently airing it’s second season, and if you haven’t had a chance to catch it yet, I recommend giving it a look.
Escaping Polygamy is a reality show that follows a group of sisters that escaped a Polygamist Mormon-offshoot cult known as The Kingston Clan or “The Order.” Now the girls focus on helping other men and women escape this lifestyle and find their own way. According to the show, women are treated as more of a commodity than people, and are often married off to sometimes much older (and not-uncommonly, related) men. Some of These girls are wedded to members of The Order before they could legally buy a pack of cigarettes.
Each episode typically follows a member of the church and their attempt to escape. In addition to providing security, physical assistance, and resources to the escapees, the show’s hosts (all former escapees themselves) provide emotional help and support for people of have been taught all their lives to fear the outside world. Learning to navigate a world they just don’t understand is not an easy task for some of the former Order members, but we often get to catch up with some of the people Shanell, Andrea, and Jessica Christensen have helped along the way.
The latest episode **Spoiler Alert** features a young mother name Lizzy who belongs to another cult known as the FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.) In some ways the FLDS treats their female members even more restrictively that The Order. Women are not allowed to cut their hair and must wear ankle length dresses, but the worst of it is that in some cases a mother is deemed to be “unworthy” to see or even speak to their own child if that child has been looked upon with favor. Lizzy, who’s daughter has been removed from her by the FLDS manages to convince their Bishop to bring the girl to see her. When the first moment alone presents itself Lizzy grabs her daughter Julie and her other 3 children and runs. 9 hours later Lizzy meets with the girls who have booked them a hotel room. In a truly heart wrenching twist, Lizzy is convinced to return to the cult in the middle of the night. Sometimes there are no happy endings.
